"Since the death of his fiancée, Nathaniel Colton's polished boots have rested beneath the beds of countless wayward wives and widows of the ton. He's careful to leave each lady smiling, and equally careful to guard his heart. So seducing Lady Georgette should pose no problem. But the beautiful reformist is no easy conquest, and Nate's considerable charm fails to entice Georgette to his bed. To woo her, Nate will have to make her believe he cares about someone besides himself--and no one is more surprised than Nate when he realizes he actually does.
Although I have heard of the author Connie Mason I haven't ever read any of her books that I am aware of (I looked) and Mia Marlowe is a newer author so I haven't read her as well. So both of these authors are new to me and I think they worked rather well together to bring about a steamy historical romance. I didn't get a chance to read the first book in this series but they are not the type that you have to read in order and can stand alone.
I don't know about everyone else but I think one of my favorite historical romance characters are the rakes or rogues. Handsome Men who think they will never fall in love and who have woed countless women. Nathaniel Colton is one of those rakes. His fiancee died of scarlet fever and he has had a serious mishap at war that might have been the cause of why they were defeated. Nathaniel spends most of his time seducing women from their men, some more willing than others. He is always careful to keep his heart hard.
The time period for this story is based around the time that Princess Charlotte death and the uproar that it caused. Certain royal dukes were in a race to see who could have a child heir first that could one day wear a crown. I am sure not everyone agreed with this process and that is were Nathaniel and is willingness to seduce women comes in handy. One of these men make Nathaniel a proposition, seduce Lady Georgette or he will let every know about the mishap at war and bring shame on to his family.
Now it's not that Nathaniel isn't willing to take this man up on his proposition, but it is who he has to seduce that bothers him. He has known Lady Georgette most of his life as she is Anne's older sister.
Lady Georgette has never been the apple of her father's eye, until the Duke of Cambridge takes an interest in her. She becomes one of the ladies that is selected to be checked out as a suitable bride for the Duke. Now all of a sudden her father and mother think she is the greatest daughter ever. So how can she tell them that she doesn't want to be a royal princess and be breed to make an heir to the crown.
Lady Georgette has other ideas of what she wants to do with her life but she wants to please her parents. After Anne's death she has always felt that they wished she was the one who had died instead of Anne. Now she has a chance to make her parents proud, but she has a passion for saving lost souls. Her ladies maid is a former whore from Lackney Lane and although Mercy can be abrasive some times Lady Georgette considers her a success. Now she wants to do the same for other fallen women and that is how she meets Nathaniel. Lady Georgette has gotten herself into a bit of trouble with the bully at Covent Gardens and he has tossed her over his shoulder..
"What on earth...are you doing here...Nathaniel?" Georgette asked between repeated blows on the man's ungiving back.Quite the interesting way to meet each other again after a long period..lol. After this incident Lady Georgette's father puts Nathaniel in charge of making sure she doesn't get into any trouble before he can get her married to the duke. He lets Nathaniel stay at their home not knowing that he has just let the man who has come to seduce his daughter right under the same roof.
"Coming to your assistance, of course." Nathaniel wondered if she has any idea how fetching her bum was waving in the air like that, her gown clenched tight across her hips.
Lady Georgette is curious about Nathaniel and even more curious after their first intoxicating kiss. Now she knows a little bit more about what her ladies maid has told her and some of the things she has read in a book. Nothing is better than experiencing it first hand though and that is dangerous for Georgette. She knows she is suppose to keep herself for the duke, but Nathaniel's kisses make her want more, but she is not as easy to seduce as Nathaniel thought she would be. Lady Georgette is spunky and not a squeamish lady like what people would think is proper. It is why I liked her!
The more Nathaniel gets to know Lady Georgette the more he feels like a heel for trying to seduce her, but doesn't want to shame his family. What he never expected was for his heart to ache again, to fall in love again.
One Night With A Rake was a steamy historical romance and if your in the mood to be seduced by a Rake then this is the book for you!
"I won't be back for a while, dearest. Maybe never. I doubt you'd want me here in any case," he told Anne. "You see, I have to seduce your sister."
