Review of Vanishing Act

Vanishing Act (Steeple Hill Love Inspired Suspense)Vanishing Act by Liz Johnson
Pages: 255
Publisher: Steeple Hill

Eighteen months ago, Nora James watched as her father was shot in an alley--and then she fled. She changed her name, her appearance and her job, hoping to keep her father's shooter at bay. For months, it worked...but now her luck has run out. A ruthless assassin is on her trail, and soon Nora, now known as Danielle, will be found. But this time, she has FBI agent Nate Andersen by her side--right? The handsome agent would give his life to protect Danielle, but he's wary of giving his heart...until a deadly confrontation leaves him with both on the line.

Another great romantic suspense from Liz Johnson. I loved her first novel and she did well with this one too.

I loved both the characters, Nate is the ruggedly handsome FBI agent with a tender heart. He is tough when he needs to be and but loving as well. Even though he didn't know that Danielle was the person he was hunting for he still took time out to help her when she was in trouble, just like a good gentleman. Nora, she is vulnerable and scared but she is not wimpy. When she gets ran off the road while riding her bike, instead of just lying on the ground screaming, she took off running. I like a woman who tries to save herself, I can't stand it when the woman just stands there and screams.

There was only one thing in this book that bothered me and that was the fact that it took Nate so long to realise that Danielle was Nora. The clues were all there and he is FBI, he should have seen them. Don't want to spoil anything but for example. He knew that Nora liked to ride bikes and when he found out that Danielle road bikes he didn't even for once even think that maybe she was Nora. Yes she looked a bit different she is in hiding but, she liked to ride bikes, she had someone after her..I mean put those clues together. Other than that I really enjoyed the book. I did like her first book better, The Kidnapping of Kenzie Thorn, but I found Vanishing Act to be a good read as well.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes Love Inspired Suspense novels or light romantic reads.

I was giving this book by the author for review.

Review of The Replacement (ARC)

The Replacement
The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff
Pages: 352
Publisher: Razorbill
Release Date: Sept. 21st

Mackie is not one of us. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, he comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess.

He is a Replacement — left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is slowly dying in the human world.

Mackie would give anything to live among us. He just wants to play bass guitar and find out more about an oddly intriguing girl named Tate.

But when Tate’s baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem.

He must face the dark creatures of the slag heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.
(B&N.com)

I really liked The Replacements, it was interesting and sort of creepy but not bad enough that younger teens can't read it. I think a lot of teenagers can relate to Mackie, he is really just a teenager who wants to fit in, in a world were he knows he doesn't really belong.

I'm not really sure what Mackie is, but he isn't human, he comes from the slap heap. Gentry has a big secret that it has been hiding for many generations, down below the surface a darkness hides. The people in Gentry have learned to just not talk about it, but Mackie needs to know about himself. When Tates sister dies, Tate goes to Mackie wanting to talk to him about the fact that she knows she is was not really her sister, it was a replacement. Mackie who is a replacement that lived doesn't want to talk to Tate about it because it hits to close to home with him. He was Malcolm's replacement but nobody calls him that, to his family and friends he is Mackie.

When he can't get what Tate says out of his head he longs to find out more about who he is and were he might belong. This takes him into a world he is not really sure he wants to go, but knows that he must if he wants to help Tate and keep his friends and family safe.

I really liked Mackie, he was a teenager who just wanted to belong in  a world where he knew he didn't fit in. He wasn't Malcolm, the real boy, he was Mackie the replacement. He was allergic to the human world and it was killing him, but he had a family and friends and he wanted to stay with them. Mackie wasn't normal because he was a replacement but he still had the feelings of a human to which Tate said, "Your normal enough" Nobody really said anything about Mackie, if they didn't think he was human, it just wasn't talk about. His father tried do his best to make him part of the family, his mother really tried to love him. His sister would do anything to protect him. Yet he just needed to find out how he belonged on his own. I felt that he was a great character.

The Slap Heap was a very creepy sort of place, but at the same times sort of a interesting place. It was what made this book slightly creepy at times, which I loved.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the weird and not normal, the slightly creepy but interesting sort of books. I believe this is Brenna Yovanoff's first novel and I will be checking out more from her in the future.

I received this book as a part of the Book It Forward Book Tours to review.

Guest Post by Author Tara Taylor Quinn

Today I have a guest post from Tara Taylor Quinn she is writing about why she went from writing just romance to romantic suspense. She has a series called the The Chapman Files: The First Wife, The Second Lie, The Third Secret, and The Fourth Victim.

I didn’t set out to write suspense. As a matter of fact, I gravitated away from it. I take in everything I hear. Or see. It becomes real to me. If not in my conscious mind, then in my sleep. I start to imagine how something feels and then, in my mind, in my emotions, I’m there. I tried for years to stop the process. Until I realized that the process is a gift. It is that which allows me to be a writer. It allows me to put things on the page that read true to my readers. It’s that ‘something’ that I don’t make or control that makes my writing come to life. So I quit fighting my empathetic tendencies. I tried, instead, to manage them. I tried to limit my exposure to things that upset my equilibrium. Suspense doesn’t make for good sleeping. I avoided it.

I never made the choice to stop avoiding it. It started to creep into my work so slowly I didn’t even notice it at first. A bit of a mystery in the middle of a love story. A little tension and drama was all it was. Or so I thought. For a long time, I was a romance writer. Period. I wrote straight romance. I was sure of it. Until I read a review about my page turning suspense. My first thought was that the reviewer hadn’t read my work. I was actually offended. And then I read the review again. There were key elements to it that rang true. And I thought about the story that I’d written. That had come out of me. When I looked at it from the outside in…there was suspense there. Just some. A little. Not enough to say I write suspense. Not enough to have to start reading ‘those’ books or watching ‘those’ movies.

My first single title book, Where the Road Ends, set out to be a straight romance. I’d contracted it as such. It was the story of a woman discovering that family was more important than career. About the importance of juggling both so that the family doesn’t falter. It was a romance. I thought. I was really wrong. It wasn’t about that at all. It was about a mother having her young child abducted from right beneath her fingertips. It was the story of that woman’s quest to do whatever it took to find her son. It was about her refusal to believe that he was dead, even when authorities insisted that it was true. It was suspense from page one until the end. Even I saw that.

And then came the Ivory Nation Trilogy. Each night, when I left my office, I looked both ways before I exited the door. Anytime I went anyplace I was aware of the dangers lurking all around me. The real dénouement came when I started carrying my portable DVD player with me everywhere – on the road, to visit family – didn’t matter. I couldn’t sleep without that DVD player. First thing I did in hotel rooms was set up my player by the bed. I found one kind of headphone I could sleep with – they came from Delta airlines. My brother, who traveled a lot, collected them as well and gave his stash to me. I watched one movie. Every night. Mary Poppins. With Julie Andrews and Dick VanDyke. Every night. I can quote the entire movie. And I would sleep, too. Dick and Julie kept me safe from my own characters.

I’m more at peace with writing suspense now. I’ve even given up Mary. I guess I’m just so used to the bad guys that I’ve learned to sleep through them. I’ve certainly accepted that which is stronger than I am. I am a writer of suspense. It wasn’t the genre I chose. I wouldn’t have consciously chosen it. But it’s what I do. And it’s what I love. It’s suspense with a twist, though. It’s suspense along a deeply emotional psychological journey. Every single time. I didn’t choose that, either. But I’m good with it!

Its a Blog Hop!

Its been a while since I have participated in the Blog Hop so I thought I would jump into day and see if I can find some new blogger. The blog hop is hosted by Crazy-for-books, so feel free to jump, or hop right in.

The Question of the Day

Do you use a rating system for your reviews and if so, what is it and why?

Yes, I do have a rating system because I think it helps those who are viewing your blog to see how much you liked or did not like a book. My rating system is ruby red slippers to go with my Wizard of Oz themed blog header. :) Ratings are one of the first thing I look for when I go read a review of of someone elses blog and it bothers me when I can't find a rating.

Beautiful Darkness ARC Review

Beautiful Darkness
Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Pages: 512
Publisher: Little Brown Books for Young Readers
Release Date: Oct. 12th

Ethan Wate used to think of Gatlin, the small Southern town he had always called home, as a place where nothing ever changed. Then he met mysterious newcomer Lena Duchannes, who revealed a secret world that had been hidden in plain sight all along. A Gatlin that harbored ancient secrets beneath its moss-covered oaks and cracked sidewalks. A Gatlin where a curse has marked Lena's family of powerful Supernaturals for generations. A Gatlin where impossible, magical, life-altering events happen.

Sometimes life-ending.

Together they can face anything Gatlin throws at them, but after suffering a tragic loss, Lena starts to pull away, keeping secrets that test their relationship. And now that Ethan's eyes have been opened to the darker side of Gatlin, there's no going back. Haunted by strange visions only he can see, Ethan is pulled deeper into his town's tangled history and finds himself caught up in the dangerous network of underground passageways endlessly crisscrossing the South, where nothing is as it seems.

First initial thoughts- Oh no this is going to just be a recap of the first one.

Then after you read a little bit more it starts to pick up and go its own way. I was really afraid I wasn't going to like it at first because it did a lot of recapping what happened in the end of the last one and though its good to have a refresher sometimes a little goes a long way.

In this book Lena is very mean to Ethan and you really don't like her much, but then I didn't like Ethan much for letting her be so mean to him. After what happened in the last book she is neither light nor dark but has a bit of both in her but she thinks she is dark. Ethan is out to save her from herself and help her to realise that she needs to claim herself and that she is not dark.

It was a little boring for me up until Ethan starts to explore the caster tunnels with his best friend Link and Liv (who is training to be a keeper). They get into a lot of trouble while in the tunnels so it gives the reader a little suspense. We also get to see Alma and some of the older casters have a little bit more of a role in this book as they help Ethan and his friends get out of trouble a lot.

I think the character that I liked the most in this book would be Riley. In the last book you just don't like her she is dark and causes a lot of trouble. In this book she plays a little bit of a different role and she starts to grow on you a little. Just because they are dark doesn't mean they wanted to be, you must remember they don't have a choice after they have been chosen.

I think there are a few surprises, one of which I was hoping would happen and some decent action towards the ending to make this sequel not to bad, but not as good as the first one. If you liked Beautiful Creatures just remember to keep going even if you think at he beginning its not going to be good because I think you will like it.

Oh yeah, and it has a cliffhanger ending!!!!!!!!!!!

I received this book to review as a part of Around the World Book Tours.

Body Gospel Giveaway!

A few weeks ago I told everyone here that I was trying to lose some weight and that beachbody.com let me review their new program called Body Gospel. What is Body Gospel? Well its a workout to Gospel music that is very uplifting and encouraging. You get three different dvd's, a walking cd, nutritional guide, resistance band, and a few more little items to help.

I have a hard time staying motivated to do anything when it comes to working out.  I am very unhealthy and I needed a boost so I was very excited to be able to review something that might get me up and off the couch or away from the computer. I have started taking some supplement pills along with my workout and I will admit I am not the best at eating healthy but I am trying to do better. It takes years to change a habit when you have been doing them for so long. I know it takes a month to change your taste buds, but its really hard to eat something that  taste nasty hoping your taste bud will change..lol.

I really like  using Body Gospel because it help me to stay encouraged with great uplifting gospel hymns. I don't know if any of you have ever seen some of the other products that beachbody.com offers like P90x or Slim in 6, but they look like a really vigorous workout and I knew that wasn't for me not until I lose some weight, but Body Gospel seems a little bit more mild than those workouts. I think Body Gospel is great for beginners like me. Each DVD has different lengths of workouts with each one getting a little more intense, and you have your core workouts, your workouts that include working with the resistance bands.

I have lost five pounds since I started using this program and trying my best to eat healthy. I know its a lifestyle change that will take me a while to get use to but I think I can do it over time. So since I am trying to get healthy I thought someone else might want to get on the health band wagon with me and Beachbody.com has given me a extra Body Gospel package that contains everything I have talked about. If you don't want to win it for yourself then maybe you have a loved one who would benefit from this program and like to try and win it for them.

Below is a video sample to let you see what type of workouts are included in Body Gospel.

Review of Hunted by the Others

Hunted by the Others by Jess Haines
Pages: 352
Publisher: Zebra

They are the Others-the vampires, mages, and werewolves once thought to exist only in our imaginations. Now they're stepping out of the shadows, and nothing in our world will ever be the same again...

In A Town Like This, Being A P.I. Can Be Murder

Shiarra Waynest's detective work was dangerous enough when her client base was strictly mortal. But ailing finances have forced her to accept a lucrative case that could save her firm-if it doesn't kill her first. Shiarra has signed on to work for a high-level mage to recover an ancient artifact owned by one of New York's most powerful vampires.

As soon as Shiarra meets sexy, mesmerizing vamp Alec Royce, she knows her assignment is even more complicated than she thought. With a clandestine anti-Other group trying to recruit her, and magi being eliminated, Shiarra needs back-up and enlists her ex-boyfriend-a werewolf whose non-furry form is disarmingly appealing-and a nerdy mage with surprising talents. But it may not be enough. In a city where the undead roam, magic rules, and even the Others aren't always what they seem, Shiarra has just become the secret weapon in a battle between good and evil-whether she likes it or not...

I wasn't really sure what to expect out of this book, but it was interesting. I liked Shia, she is not stupid she knows vampires are dangerous. Though she fills drawn to Alec Royce, she still knows he is dangerous and could rip her throat out. I like this aspect of actually thinking a vampire is dangerous (since they would be) instead of not ever being scared of them.

I have been having a hard time lately getting into any books I read and I thought this one was a little slow but it was still not a bad read. I blame any problems with the book on my mind just not being in the mood for anything lately.

I liked the fact that she is a PI and even though The Others are out there she doesn't really want anything to do with them. She prefers human clients, but because her business is going down hill and she needs money fast that she takes a case from a mage, that pretty much puts her in a dangerous situation with Alec, that vampire. This whole case pretty much changes the course of her life and its interesting to see what happens. This book is the first of a series so it will be interesting to see what happens to Shia.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes urban fantasy.

Plain Kate

Plain Kate
Plain Kate by Erin Bow
Pages: 336
Publisher: Arthur A. Levine Books
Release date: Sept. 1st

Plain Kate lives in a world of superstitions and curses, where a song can heal a wound and a shadow can work deep magic. As the wood-carver's daughter, Kate held a carving knife before a spoon, and her wooden charms are so fine that some even call her "witch-blade" -- a dangerous nickname in a town where witches are hunted and burned in the square.

For Kate and her village have fallen on hard times. Kate's father has died, leaving her alone in the world. And a mysterious fog now covers the countryside, ruining crops and spreading fear of hunger and sickness. The townspeople are looking for someone to blame, and their eyes have fallen on Kate.

Enter Linay, a stranger with a proposition: In exchange for her shadow, he'll give Kate the means to escape the town that seems set to burn her, and what's more, he'll grant her heart's wish. It's a chance for her to start over, to find a home, a family, a place to belong. But Kate soon realizes that she can't live shadowless forever -- and that Linay's designs are darker than she ever dreamed.

Been having a hard time finding a book that can hold my interest so instead of reviewing this one I am just putting up a blurb to help promote the book. I think it would be a great book for young readers so if you have a young reader at home you might want to look into this one when it comes out. There are lot of great reviews on this book, but I just couldn't get into it.

A CSN Store Review!

I was so excited when the CSN stores contacted me about doing a review. Then I started doing some looking around and they have so many different stores from electronics, dining room, office supplies, etc. It took me forever to decide on what I might want to review, but I finally decided on a chair. Not just any chair but a new chair to sit in while I type up my reviews. I have been in need of a brand new chair for years, so I thought this would be the ideal thing to review. I have a lot of lower back pain and when I seen this chair with a built in massager, I just about flipped out.  I am so excited and I can't wait to get my chair from csnstores.com. So look out for my review of this chair in the future!

Review of The Hypnotist

The Hypnotist (The Reincarnationist, Book 3)
The Hypnotist by M. J. Rose
Pages: 416
Publisher: Mira

Lucian Glass is haunted by the memory of his girlfriends death twenty years ago. Lucian is now a FBI agent working for the Art Crimes division. He is trying to find who ever it is responsible for ruining priceless art work. His trail leads him to Malachai Samuels a skilled hypnotist who is looking for some very old memory tools. Is there a connection between Lucian's and Malachai's case.

Interwoven between the pages of this book is a story of international intrigue, past life's connecting to the present, and dangerous business deals as demands are being made that more and more priceless works of art will be destroyed unless they are giving Hypnos a really large sculpture that is suppose to help a person gain paranormal powers.

The basis of the story is finding the "memory tools" and  this takes the reader around the world through libraries and old documents as they search for items that will aid in helping a person see all their past life's therefore proving that reincarnation exist.

The Hypnotist is the first book I have ever  read by M. J. Rose and though it was interesting, I couldn't get past the confusion that I felt at the beginning of the book. I am sure it is just M. J. Rose's writing style that I am not use to, but each chapter at the beginning jumped from one thing to another and I was very confused as to what was going on. Now if you make it through that and continue on you will find a very interesting story of intrigue that was good. It was because of the beginning that it took me longer to read this book as it would normally because I would put it down and go on to something else then come back.

Over all it was a good book with two very solid male leads and a interesting premise of could there possible be such a thing as reincarnation. Though it is not a belief I hold it still makes for a interesting storyline. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that are like a treasure hunt as you race to find the clues.

This book was given to me by TLC book tours for review.

Review of The Secret of Ka

The Secret of Ka
The Secret of Ka by Christopher Pike
Pages: 416
Publisher: Harcourt Children's Books

One minute Sara's bored on vacation in Istanbul. The next, she's unearthed a flying carpet that cleverly drags her to the mysterious Island of the Djinn—or genies. By her side is Amesh, a cute guy she has a crush on but doesn't yet trust. When Amesh learns the secret of invoking djinn, he loses control. He swears he'll call upon only one djinn and make one wish. The plan sounds safe enough. But neither Sara nor Amesh are any match for the monster that that swells before them. It hypnotizes Amesh, compelling him to steal Sara’s flying carpet and leave her stranded on the island.

Discovering the carpet has sparked a new path for Sara, one that will lead her to battle creatures even deadlier than djinn. In this fight, Sara can save mankind, herself, or the boy she cares for. Who will she be forced to sacrifice?

I use to love Christopher Pike when I was a teenager, but I just couldn't get into this one very well. It had a interesting story but its 416 pages and I just think it could have been a little shorter and still told a good story. I think it would be a great story for children ages 10-14, thought it could appeal to older teens.

Just because I couldn't get into it doesn't mean it wasn't a great book, I have seen some reviews of people who loved it. I think if you like magical/fantasy  type books you might like this book.

I reviewed this book as a part of Book It Forward Book Tours.

Review of Beautiful Mess: The Story of Diamond Rio

Beautiful Mess: The Story of Diamond Rio (NelsonFree)
Beautiful Mess: The Story of Diamond Rio by Diamond Rio and Tom Roland
Pages: 288
Publisher: Thomas Nelson

I have not read many autobiographies, so when the opportunity came my way to review this book I thought it would be great to read. I loved Diamond Rio when I was younger and I thought it would be fascinating to read about how they got together, etc.
The book starts out with the reader learning that things were not going so well with Diamond Rio. The lead singer Marty Roe couldn’t sing on key anymore. It was a real trying time for them and if Marty couldn’t fix the problem with his vocal cords then the group would have to break up.

Then the book takes a chapter for each of the band members and sort of gives you there life story from when they were small to when the group gets together under a different name at the time called the Tennessee River Boys. The one thing that bothers me is the chapters seem sort of short and do no contain enough information since it is a autobiography I believe it should be a bit more revealing and more personal than biographies are, so I found it a bit lacking.

Then after the chapters on each band member it takes you through the wild ride they have had together and then back to the original problem of Marty’s voice and how it gets fixed. Yes, you can say that Diamond Rio’s ride through country music has been A Beautiful Mess, but I just think the book could have been a bit better.

I would recommend it to anyone who loves reading autobiographies because it is a decent book.

Blog Follower Appreciation Month is finished

It is that time and my BFAB is over, so in the next couple of weeks I will be figuring up entries and finding winners, so please be patient because it might take a while and due to the fact that most of the books are coming from me I can only send out so many packages each pay period since shipping can get sort of costly. :0) I appreciate everyone who participated both authors, bloggers and followers. I believe it was a successful month and I even gained a few new followers so that is always great! Thanks for being such great followers!!
