Heart of Stone by Sandra Kay
The Strangely Beautiful Tale of Miss Percy Parker by Leanna Renee Hieber
Guilty Pleasures by Laurell Hamilton (thought I would try the Anita Blake series)

Yesterday's Promise by Linda Lee Chaikin/Beneath a Southern Sky by Deborah Raney

Yesterday's Promise by Linda Lee Chaikin
Pages: 364
Publisher: Waterbrook Press

I was given a couple of books to review, but I had so many book on my plate that I wasn't able to get to them at the time I was suppose too, but I wanted to highlight them on my blog so that people could at least hear about them.

Book Blurb:

He fought to seek his fortune.

Would he lose a greater treasure: the love he left behind?

As the son of the squire of Grimston Way, aristocrat Rogan Chantry has fought hard to win his independence from Sir Julien Bley and the British South Africa Company. Now, his pursuit of a mysterious deposit of gold, marked on a map willed to him by his murdered uncle, Henry Chantry, is challenged by a new complication: the impending British colonization of South Africa. Can Sir Rogan find the gold in the midst of escalating tensions among the native tribesmen, the missionaries sent to win them, and the new colonists?

Meanwhile, Evy Varley, the woman Rogan loves back in England, is headed for a brave yet dangerous confrontation with Henry’s killer–but at what price? With so much against Rogan and Evy, a reunion seems improbable, if not impossible. Can yesterday’s promise hold them faithful to the hope of future freedom and a victorious love?

About the author:

Linda Lee Chaikin has written numerous best-selling and award-winning books and series, including the Silk series (Heart of India Trilogy), A Day to Remember series, The Empire Builders, Royal Pavilion Trilogy, Arabian Winds Trilogy, The Buccaneers Trilogy, and For Whom the Stars Shine, a finalist for the prestigious Christy Award.  She and her husband make their home in Northern California.

This is the second book in the East of the Sun series, and when I looked up some reviews to see who people liked this book some mentioned that you might want to read the first book which is called Tomorrow's Treasures. It looks like a good book and it has received a lot of good reviews so I am looking forward to being able to read this at a later date. If you like Christian historical romance books then I believe you should looking into this series.

Now two men have the right to her daughter, her life, and her love. Will Daria return to her beloved first husband, abandoning Cole? Or will she reject Nate and choose the only man her daughter has ever called “Daddy”—a man she has come to cherish with all her heart?

About the author:

Deborah Raney is the award-winning author of several novels, including A Vow to Cherish, which inspired the feature-length film of the same name. She and her husband, author/illustrator Ken Raney, have four children and make their home in Kansas.

This is book one of the series and it is a Contemporary Christian book. I know a bit about Deborah Raney's books to know that it will be a very emotional book and very uplifting. It has receive a lot of great reviews. The storyline sounds very interesting and I can't wait to read this one.

Both books were provided by Waterbrook Press.

A World of Wolves!
Terry Spears

My love of wolves began with Jack London’s tales, Call of the Wild and White Fang. Certainly most children’s tales only saw wolves in an evil light—Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs come to mind. I don’t recall the movie, maybe The Neverending story? Where an evil-looking wolf peered out of the woods, its eyes glowing, looking as if it were demon possessed. My son was terrified of the wolf in that movie and had nightmares for months. So I hope that my series will at least give readers another view of a wolf because my werewolves are wolves in their wolf form, while keeping their wolf instincts and senses in their human form, nothing beastly about them. Well except if they’re the bad guys, but they come in human and werewolf form, so it’s the human half that is the problem!

In most of my stories, the hero and heroine are werewolves, rather than one is and one isn’t and to love the other forever, the other has to be changed. So in both Heart of the Wolf and Destiny of the Wolf, the hero and heroine are werewolves. But in To Tempt the Wolf, I wanted something different. In this, the heroine is not a werewolf, but she’s not exactly human either. I still didn’t want to go with the strictly human equation. Not yet. In Legend of the White Wolf, neither the hero or heroine are werewolves. So that was fun. Can you imagine trying to figure out what has happened to you if you’ve been bitten and have no mentor to help you through it all? Talk about babes in the woods!

In Seduced by the Wolf, coming in August, both hero and heroine are red wolves. I enjoyed showing different kinds of wolves also in these stories, like the Arctic wolves in Legend of the White Wolf. And even in Taming the Highland Wolf, I’ll be introducing another kind of wolf, besides a Highland gray, of course, and the red who’s on a mysterious quest! J

Everyone probably knows that wolves were decimated because of bounties placed on them in the States. I read where in Scotland, they burned forests to kill the wolves. Talk about drastic measures.

I also included the Irish wolfhound in Taming the Highland Wolf, that was trained to kill wolves in early times. But in this story, they’re part of a Highland werewolf family, and the laird of the castle is definitely the alpha male of the pack.

Here’s an excerpt from Legend of the White Wolf, just released:

From Legend of the White Wolf after Cameron MacPherson has had a run in with an Arctic wolf and he’s been wounded, while their guide, Charles, has also been injured in a separate incident:

She looked up at Cameron. “I need to return to Charles. To watch over him.”

“Lie down with me, Faith, for just a little while.”

He half pleaded and half commanded. The commanding made her think of her idiot ex-fiancĂ©. Always in charge. Always bossing her around. But the pleading, that…was another matter entirely.

She came to her senses and shook her head. “You’d better get something on before you freeze.” Hating to reject him further, she decided she had to leave because she was certain she’d hate herself more if she stayed.

Besides, Charles needed her as badly injured as he was. She’d never forgive herself if he got worse and she wasn’t there to monitor him closely. And they required some answers from him also, soon.

But before she exited the tent, Cameron groaned, and she glanced back at him. He’d slipped into the sleeping bag, his face white with pain. And then she was really torn. Stay with Cameron for a little while, just until he fell asleep?

Or return to Charles pronto and save herself?

***

I hope you might take a chance on the wild side and read a werewolf book or two where wolves rule! And remember on these cold winter days, curling up with a hunk of a werewolf is a great way to get rid of the chill under the sheets! Are you willing to take that chance?

Raven's Ladder by Jeffrey Overstreet

A DEADLY MENACE IS BREAKING THROUGH THE GROUND. THE PEOPLE OF ABASCAR MUST ABANDON THEIR STONE REFUGE AND FLEE INTO VULNERABILITY IN THE FOREST. BUT THEIR KING HAS HAD A VISION…

Following the beacon of Auralia’s colors and the footsteps of a mysterious dream-creature, King Cal-raven has discovered a destination for his weary crowd of refugees. It’s a city only imagined in legendary tales. And it gives him hope to establish New Abascar.

But when Cal-raven is waylaid by fortune hunters, his people become vulnerable to a danger more powerful than the prowling beastmen––House Bel Amica. In this oceanside kingdom of wealth, enchantment, and beauty, deceitful Seers are all too eager to ensnare House Abascar’s wandering throng.

Even worse, the Bel Amicans have discovered Auralia’s colors, and are twisting a language of faith into a lie of corruption and control.

If there is any hope for the people of Abascar, it lies in the courage of Cyndere, daughter of Bel Amica’s queen; the strength of Jordam the beastman; and the fiery gifts of the ale boy, who is devising a rescue for prisoners of the savage Cent Regus beastmen.

As his faith suffers one devastating blow after another, Cal-raven’s journey is a perilous climb from despair to a faint gleam of hope––the vision he sees in Auralia’s colors.

F&F: Book recommendations

What keeps you from recommending a book? Poor writing? Poor theology? Explicit sex? Profanity? Violence? Inappropriate subject matter? Are there any books you love so much you would recommend them to anyone or does each recommendation you make take the person you are recommending the book to into consideration?

If its a Christian book then I sometimes hesitate to recommend it to my secular friends or fellow bloggers. It really depends on the content, take Swinging on a Star by Janice Thompson for instant, I love the Weddings by Bella series and would recommend it for anyone even though its a Christian book because it is a light-hearted read and doesn't really preach to you and I think even those who don't read this type of book would still like reading it.

If its Secular, then I don't really like recommending it to my Christian friends unless I know that it is pretty clean of any vulgarity or sex. Speaking of those two things I don't recommend those types of books to any of my readers without at least putting up a disclaimer. If I didn't like it I know that doesn't mean that someone else might not like it, so I will put out a recommendation that if you like a certian type of book then you might like this. Just because my taste is a certian way doesn't mean everyone feels that way. I will look up other reviews of the book to see how others feel about it and I might add that to my review.

So even though I read both  types of fiction I know not all of my friends do so I do try and makes sure they right people get the right recommendations, so I don't have mad friends..LOL.

Review of Swinging on a Star by Janice Thompson

Swinging on a Star by Janice Thompson

There's a fine line between ambitious and crazy. Bella's just not sure where it is. Bella Rossi's life is nearing perfection. Not only does she have the perfect guy, but she's also running a successful wedding-planning business and is about to plan its most ambitious wedding yet--a Renaissance-themed fairy tale come true, complete with period costumes and foods, horse-drawn carriages, and even a castle. There's only one hitch. The best man just happens to be Hollywood's hottest and most eligible bachelor, and he's showing an interest in Bella. Oh, and did we mention he's staying at her house to avoid the paparazzi? With all the pressure surrounding this wedding, Bella's not sure she's going to make it through. Add her starstruck sister and her feuding aunt and uncle, and you've got a recipe for disaster--and a lot of laughs.

First of I just have to say that I love this series! It is laugh out loud funny. If you have not read the first book Fools Rush In, then let me explain a bit about this family. Picture a large Italian family, Bella has three brother, and one sister. Then there is the Aunt from her mothers side and the Uncle from her fathers side and most of them live in the same house. There is a lot of chaos going on in this family. Uncle Laz loves Dean Martin, but Aunt Rosa thinks Frank Sinatra is the best, so they are always fighting over that, plus the food.

Bella and her family live in Texas and that is about as far from Italy as you can get..lol. She mets this guy D.J who is about as Texas as you can get. You put them together and you got a fun little mix, not to mention his family. Now Bella has taken over the family wedding facility as is trying to make it into a better place by offereing different styles of weddings. In Fools Rush In it was a boot scootin' wedding and now in Swinging on a Star is a Renaissance theme. So just imagine everything you can think of to go wrong mixed with a few things that go right and you have a great comical book.

Janice Thompson gives you enough of all the characters in this series to really make you feel like you know them all and you just can't help but love the whole family and all the friends. My favorites are Uncle Laz and Aunt Rosa  because they are just so cute and love how they argue all the time its so funny. In this book you get to learn a lot more about them and I loved it.

If you like light-hearted fun filled books that just make you sigh at the end because you really didn't want it to end then I believe you would love to read this book. Even though you can read this book with out the first in the series I would recommend reading the first book because you just get to know more about the famiy and how things come to being how they are and its a fun read too.

BTT: Olympics

You may have noticed–the Winter Olympics are going on. Is that affecting your reading time? Have you read any Olympics-themed books? What do you think about the Olympics in general? Here’s your chance to discuss!

I really have no desire to watch any of the Olympics. I use to watch the skating with my mom before she passed on but other than that it really doesn't interest me. I am not a sports person and just can't get interested in sitting there watching people compete. I have also never read any book that have a Olympic theme.

What about you?

Review of Legend of the White Wolf by Terry Spear

Legend of the White Wolf by Terry Spear
Pages: 367
Publishers: Sourcebooks Casablanca

In this fourth in Spear's series, Private Eye Cameron MacPherson and Faith O'Mallery are both on quests that lead them into the world of magical wolves...

Cameron arrives in the Canadian Arctic to search for his partners in his P.I. business who are late returning from a hunting trip. Faith is there to discover what her father had seen in the same area years earlier that had made him lose touch with reality—man-wolves, he called them.

The two tumble into an icy world of enemies bent on destroying the lupus garou kind. As they turn into lupus garou themselves, and bond with the pack that only they can rescue from destruction, Cameron and Faith find their soul mates in each other.

This is the first book of Terry Spear I have read, so I have not read the other books in the series and normally I don't like doing that, but the book sounded interesting. It can be read alone even though it is part of a series.

I am a huge werewolf fan so I really enjoyed this book and its interesting tale. Cameron is in search of his two P.I friends who have not come back after a hunt. Cameron and his other partner received distressing calls from them and so Cameron goes in search of them while Gavin stays behind to work the P.I business.

Faith is looking for her ex-boyfriend Hilson who she believes has stolen her fathers research paper. Her father swears that he saw some half wolf half man beast while on a search for bigfoot and she desperately wants to prove that her father is not insane. She also needs to deal with Hilson.

Both Cameron and Faith end up at Back Country Tours looking for some answers and sparks fly. Cameron is instantly taken with Faith and is happy to find out that they will be stay in the same lodging cabins. With a huge storm coming in they end up spending the night in the same cabin.

Kintail, and his pack are the artic wolfs that everyone sees at the back country tour business. When Kintail sets his sights on Faith, he automatically does not like Cameron. Then Cameron is turned into a werewolf causing a whole knew set of problems for Kintail. Then by accident Faith is bite and now they are both werewolfs with out a pack. That is not there biggest problem as there are people out there who are trying to hunt down the magical creatures...

This book has great characters. The hero Cameron is sexy and strong and the heroine Faith is sweet and also strong. The bad guys are those kind that you love to hate. Kintail, is agrressive and strong and you don't want to like him but a part of you does. Lila Grayson, well she can just make you mad, but you still like her.

Over all I really enjoyed reading this book and would recommmend it to those who love urban fantasy or paranormal romances.

Review of Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief Movie

Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief
Staring: Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, and more.

It's the 21st century, but the gods of Mount Olympus and assorted monsters have walked out of the pages of high school student Percy Jackson's Greek mythology texts and into his life. And they're not happy: Zeus' lightning bolt has been stolen, and Percy is the prime suspect. Even more troubling is the sudden disappearance of Percy's mother. As Percy adapts to his newly discovered status as a demi-god (his father is Poseidon), he finds himself caught between the battling titans of Mt. Olympus. He and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save Percy's mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves. (Summary from Comingsoon.net)

**May contain spoilers**

If you are not a big fan of movies that are adapted from books because you know they are not going to be the same and you loved the book, then I can tell you right now that you will probably not like this movie.

Now I liked the movie for what it was a movie loosely based on The Lightning Thief book, but I still was a bit dissappointed at what got left out and what was added to it. I think they could have still had a great story if they would have left it more to how the book was written.

For example:

Mrs. Dodds was a substitute English teacher, not the Pre Algebra teacher. Now why do they have to change that. There is no Nancy Bobofits, now come on, I don't know about you but I was so looking forward to seeing that part in the book where she lands in the fountain..lol.

When Percy ends up at Camp Half Blood, they already know who he is, instead of finding out while he was training. Instead of being sent on a quest, he and the other two that go with him, take off without permission. Luke gives them a map that will take them to the underworld and tells them how to get to the underworld. It also shows them three different places they will have to go to get the three pearls that they will need to help them get back from the Underworld. Ummm, didn't Pesidon give those to Percy as a gift in the book?

Neither Ares or his daughter are in the book (to me that was a great part of the book) The picture of the guy with Percy..believe it or not but that is Hades..yeah..uh not the Hades I pictured.

That is just a few things from a long list of things that  got turned around or added.

So it was things like that that really made me a bit made while I was watching it. It was hard to watch because I kept thinking to myself..that didn't happen that way!! That wasn't in the book!! No No its all wrong!!  Once I just decided to watch it as the movie it is and quit  comparing it to the movie, it wasn't that bad.

Overall, it was a good family film that everyone can enjoy. It had some fun action, cool FX, and gave you a few laughs.

They were going well, weren't they? Just a few hours ago I'd walked out of the castle, feeling like a queen. On top of the world. And now, here I sat...the village idiot. In the stockades.
The perfect ending to the perfect night.

(Bella, is a wedding planner and the theme of the wedding is medivel times, so that is the castle she is talking about. They made a castle of sorts to hold the wedding in and just when she thought things were going great..well..lol..a little mistaken identity lands her in jail...its a very funny book.)

The Bricklayer by Noah Boyd

Stillson took two quick steps toward him, thrusting the black automatic forward, being careful not to get to close. "Are you nuts? You some sort of tough-guy construction worker? Is that it?

"Bricklayer"

"What?"

"I'm a brick mason," the man said.

(A little more info about this part...Stillson and another guy are robbing a back where the Bricklayer just happens to be..he is not your average bricklayer...LOL)

Review of Overland by Mark Stephen Levy

Overland by Mark Stephen Levy
Pages: 237
Publisher: AuthorHouse

After Danny Benson finishes medical school he wants nothing more than to start his residency and settle down to marry his fiancée, Heather. But on the day of his final exam, Danny receives a letter.

The engagement is off. Heather's baffling explanation: she's going to London where she will travel overland on the Magic Bus to Kathmandu. His plans shattered, Danny finds himself on a journey thousands of miles from home, in search of the woman he loves.

When he discovers her on a bus somewhere east of Europe the reunion is less than stellar. They spend the entire ride to Afghanistan debating whether to stay together or break up forever. Now, arriving in Kabul, exhausted from their long bus trip, fate will decide their dispute for them. The following day, December 27th, 1979, the Soviet Union invades Afghanistan.

What happens next is their moment of truth as Danny and Heather collide with history.

Overland is a romantic adventure story set back in a heated moment in history. Mark Stephen Levy has a great way of describing the country side of Afghanistan that makes you feel as if you are right there in the middle of all the commotion. By the wonderful discriptions you can tell that he has travelled to the country.

Its a nice love story about one man's search for the woman he loves and how far a person would be willing to go for love. Not many people would travel all the way to the Middle East to chase after a person after they write you a note saying they were leaving you, for a country. Then to get stuck in the middle of a war and have to fight for your own survival, hoping that the other one is okay and not dead.

The discription of the scenry is very detailed but I find that his characters don't have the same depth. Though I like Danny, Heather, and Emily well enough I just felt that there could have been more. This a very short book and maybe the author could have expanded the depth of the characters a little and made the story longer.

I am not saying that I did not like because I did. I think this author will only get better with each novel he writes. If you like Historical Romance Adventure books then I would recommend this book to you. Would give a 3.5 but don't have a half a shoe. :)

Review of Darklight by LesleyLivingston

Darklight by Lesley Livingston
Pages: 312
Publisher: Harper Teen

In the first book, Wonderous Strange, Kelly finds out about her fairy heritage. She is the heir of the Winter King, but she also is the daughter of the Autumn Queen, who is also the Queen of Darkness. After a huge event that happened back during the Nine nights, Sonny is sent back to the Other world and Kelly is left in the mortal world.

With everything that happened in the first book you would have thought Kelly would learn not to go running around Central Park, but that doesn't happen. The necklace that Puck gave to Kelly has a lot of play in this book. The Wee Green Men that it belongs too wants it back. They don't care if they have to unattach her head to get it. You will see a lot of the Wee Green Men (who are not really small) as the book progresses. A fight in Central Park with them sends Fennrys and Kelly into the Otherworld and to a reunion with her boyfriend, Sonny.

Things are not right in the land of fairies and Kelly and Sonny are caught in the middle of fairy deception, but who is decieving who? Will everything end up tearing Sonny and Kelly apart?

This book is very hard to describe because I didn't want to give away a whole lot because it might ruin things for those who have not read the first one (which you should) or this one. The ending was very much a shocker and I didn't see it coming, though I should have..lol. It also leaves you with a cliff hanger..aaaah. I love cliff hangers but then again I don't.

I really like this series, there are so many twist and turns, which I love. Sometimes I think I have things figured out..which fairy is the bad one..then I don't. The storyline is great and the characters are very well defined. I love when a book makes me what to fight with them, laugh with them, be sad with them. I really can't wait to find out what is going on in the otherworld. I know something big is brewing I am just not quite sure..I have a bit of a idea, but I guess I will have to wait and see.

This book has left me with a lot of questions which I am sure I will find the answers too in the third book. I think this is what makes a good series when they can keep you wondering so that you will want to read the next book.

If you love fairy stories then you really should read Lesley Livingston's series. I have not read a lot of books about fey, but so far this series is the best that I have read.

(I was giving this book by Harper Teen in exchange for a honest review)
