Starts tomorrow: The 25 Days of Christmas book giveaway extraganza!

For the last couple of years I have done the 12 days of Christmas but this year I tried for 25 and for the most part I got authors to agree to give away a book and or books for each day. Though some are busy and I didn't hear back from a few after they agreed so on those days I will just giveaway a copy of one of my own books that I have laying around the house.

I asked the authors to give me a Christmas memory or  tradition and some were short winded while others were long winded...lol. (some opted not to say anything about Christmas)They are from both Christian authors and Secular authors, some who might have never been heard of so its a good chance to find a new author. So tune into tomorrow to get started with some great Christmas cheer and of course books!

(Wish I had a cool button like a lot of other people but I am not tech savy..lol)

It's Monday! What are you reading?

This is a meme started by J. Kaye's Book Blog. All you have to do is tell everyone what you are currently reading.

So I have started some books, I have a bad habit of picking them up at random and start reading..lol

Wake by Lisa McMann (not sure about this one, the beginning seems a bit cheezy, but hoping it gets better)

The Maze Runner by James Dashner (The wierd Lingo in this one is making it hard for me to get into, but I am trying! :) )

The Magic Warble by Victoria Simcox (for blog tour) (Not really started this one yet but need too)

The Cemetry Gate by Marianne Paige (just started this one and its sort of wierd..lol) (For blog tour)

Well there is what I have started for this week and I am sure I will end up grabbing something else just because its a habit I can't seem to break..lol (wish I read faster then maybe I wouldn't be so tempted to grab something else and see what it is like)

So what are you reading?

Monday Blogger Spotlight!

Welcome Jessica from Book Bound. I hope everyone will take a look at her blog.

How long have you been blogging?

I have only been blogging for about a month. I'm a newb, but very much enjoying it.

How did you come up with the name of your blog?

My blog was initially going to be a personal blog about my journey to (hopefully) getting published. So I was thinking of a name that would represent that, and Book Bound just came to me.

Tell me a little about yourself.

I, obviously, am a book lover. When I am not working, I am either reading or writing. I hope to have a career in writing and am most interested in writing paranormal romance and YA. Aside from books, I am an animal lover. I've worked as a wildlife rehabilitator, a zookeeper, and as the shelter administrator of an animal shelter in the last four years.

Do you have any weekly features?

I haven't started any of my own weekly features, but I participate in "In My Mailbox", "Teaser Tuesday", "Waiting on Wednesday" and "The Friday 56".

What is your favorite genre? Do you just review it or do you review anything?

My favorite genre, hands down, is paranormal romance. I would say the majority of the reviews that I will be doing will be paranormal romance, but I also enjoy YA, urban fantasy, chick lit, horror, contemporary romance, historicals and general fiction.

What are some of your favorite authors?

Jodi Picoult, Gena Showalter, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Deidre Knight, Jacquelyn Frank, Katie MacAlister, Nalini Singh, Arthur Golden...just to name a few.

What are some books you have recently read that you would deem a must read?

I recently finished Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers series and absolutely loved it. While her writing style is not for everyone, I would absolutely recommend this series to anyone who prefers a more mature writing voice.

Thanks a lot for having me!

Saturday mailbox raid

In my mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren. I like doing my mailbox run on Saturdays because its the last day of the week that I might recieve a book. Did get to many this week, but thats okay.

Here they are:

For book tour:

The Ghost, the Egghead, and Babe Ruth's Piano by Larry Sweitzer (middle grade fiction)

It’s the summer of 2004 and Freddie Holtzman can’t wait to get to Camp Mason, a summer camp for eggheads or rather, gifted teens. He hopes to reconnect with Ginny Haig, a girl he met at camp last year. Freddie’s old friends, Logan and Monty, are there along with some new faces. He tries to win Ginny’s affection, but every time he tries to talk to her, he says—and does—nerdy things.

At Camp Mason, a science fair pits the eggheads against one another for the top prize of a five thousand dollar scholarship. But, when the projects go missing, friendships are put to the test, relationships get put on hold, and everyone’s a suspect. To make matters worse, the camp is haunted by young Billy Mason who died there decades ago. The boys are determined to solve the mystery of the ghost and the missing science projects.

Freddie’s quest to win the scholarship—and the girl of his dreams—are constantly in jeopardy. There are complications at every turn: the ghost, a creepy caretaker, Freddie’s high school nemesis, a cantankerous camp manager, and a saboteur all threaten his chance to win the prize and Ginny’s heart.

I bought:

Box set of three Percy Jackson books:
The Lightning Thief
The Sea of Monsters
The Titan's Curse

(I have heard so many good things about this series and I wanted to get to it before the movie comes out for The Lightning Thief, I seen a trailer and it looked good.)

In the cheap section I got:

The Hollow: Drowned by Christopher Golden and Ford Lytle Gilmore

No one is safe in Sleepy Hollow.....
There's something in the river.
Something enchanting.
Something dangerous
Something deadly

(Well it was only 1.97 and it sounds interesting..lol Okay I just found out this one is book two so now I must search for book one.)

Real Vampires Have Curves by Gerry Bartlett ($3.97)

What-did you think all vamps were pale, thin and brooding? Don't I wish.

Gloriana St. Clair is an eternally "full-figured" vampire-she just happened to be bloating when a sexy Scotsman sank his teeth into her. She and said Scot-Angus Jeremiah Campbell III, aka Jeremy Blade-have been on and off again for centuries, currently off. A couple hundred years has taught them how to press each other's buttons-in good ways and bad.

Glory's headed for Austin and a new business venture: Vintage Vamp's Emporium. After all, she loves clothes, and she is an antique. Only problem is, there's a billionaire techno-freak vampire hunter on the loose. Blade's in total he-vampire mode, and wants Glory to move in with him so he can "protect" her. But it's time for this vamp to explore her own powers.

Well that is all I got this week. So what books did you get in the mail?

Review of Dead Until Dark by Charliane Harris

Dead Until Dark by Charliane Harris
Pages: 292
Publisher: Ace Books

Its a time when vampires can roam free amongst humans because of a new synthetic blood called True Blood. But not all vampires are that keen on the synthetic blood when there is a how lot of real blood just walking around......

Sookie Stackhouse is a small town waitress in Bon Temps, Louisiana. She keeps to herself alot because she can read peoples minds. She doesn't like to but sometimes she just can't help doing it. So she doesn't do much dating because its not so fun when you can hear what the guy is thinking about you. When Bill comes to town it changes everything for her.

Bill is a vampire and she can't read his mind, so things are very quiet and normal feeling to her when she is around him. He is talk, dark, handsome and dangerous, but Sookie can't help being drawn to him. Vampire Bill is trying to mainstream, which means he is living on True Blood, so that he can just live a simple life in Bon  Temp.

A series of murders disrupts his plans because most of the victims have bite marks. Even though they are old marks some of the towns people are not so sure it wasn't Bill. Sookie knows it wasn't Bill, but she also knows it wasn't her brother either, the other suspect. So she has to try to read peoples minds and find out who the killer is before she ends up the next victim.

Okay, so I signed up to do a vampire challenge from Alucard's Rose. One of the things I said I would do was look up True Blood on netflix and try watching it. At this time I didn't know it was based on a series of books. Well I watched it and well it is okay, but I can't stand anything HBO does because they have to base everything around sex.

So I decided to try the book because I know that books are always better and it is true with Dead Until Dark. I love Sookie, she has to be one of my favorite new characters for this year. You can just hear that southern accent in your mind while you are reading..lol.  Yes, there are sex scenes in the book but nothing like what is in the series True Blood.  It is fun seeing characters come to life, but I must rather keep them as they are in the book. I also hate how they can't seem to put anything that was in the book in the show. Do they always have to change things around..argh!

Okay enough harping on the show lets get to the book. This is also my first ever book by Charlaine Harris and so far I have found her style of writing to be very easy to read. I didn't want to but the book down because I always wanted to know what was going to happen next to Sookie and Vampire Bill.

The book has great characters that you can really fall in love with, even the semi bad vampire Eric is cool. The one thing that made me laugh is that the main character vampire's name is Bill. Now if you were like me you just couldn't help but laugh because I never think Bill when I think vampire, but it really fits him when you say Vampire Bill. We are in the south and it just sort of rolls of your tongue reall good. Say it with me....Vampire Bill.....LOL  Okay, well I really don't know what else to say about this book except that I really loved this book. I have several of the other books and I hope I like them too.

So if you haven't read this book yet and you love vampire books I would suggest you run out now and get the book.

Review of Perfect Timing by Jill Mansell

Perfect Timing by Jill Mansell
Pages: 416
Publisher: Sourcebooks

When you meet the man of your dreams on girls night out, it’s hardly…Perfect Timing

In this fresh and funny contemporary romance by bestselling author Jill Mansell, Poppy Dunbar’s whole life gets turned upside down after a chance encounter with a handsome stranger...

Never a troublemaker, Poppy had always been content with the way things were supposed to be done—which included marrying predictable Rob McBride. But that was before she met Tom Kennedy the night before her wedding. Could she really be falling in love with a stranger?

Unable to forget Tom, or go through with the wedding, Poppy runs off to London. Her new life and colorful friends are anything but predictable. Misunderstandings, family secrets, and jealous quarrels ensue, but can Poppy stop running long enough to figure out what—or, rather, who—is in her heart?

This is the first book by Jill Mansell I have ever read and I found it to be witty and clever at times. It was also a bit slow and draggy at times.

Perfect Timing has some really great characters, I loved Poppy and Casper. I loathed Claudia, though she grows on you as the story progresses.

Poppy is one of those characters that you can't help but love even though you think she is a bit stupid. She has bad judgement when it comes to a lot of things, friends, men, even thinks one of her straight friends is gay. She is just really sort of a ditz, but you can't help but want things to go right for her. Though this a decent story it just really didn't keep my interest and sometimes had a hard time getting into it.

If you like romantic comedies with a twist then I believe you will like this book.

On my Wishlist!

Not feeling to well today, have a major sinus infection along with alergies. So I am going to list just one book off my wishlist. Its a book that just recently came out.

Stephen King's Under the Dome

Celebrated storyteller Stephen King returns to his roots in this tour de force featuring more than 100 characters—some heroic, some diabolical—and a supernatural element as baffling and chilling as any he’s ever conjured.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as “the dome” comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a selectwoman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry.

But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

With some of the most spectacularly sinister characters King has ever imagined and a driving plot, Under the Dome is Stephen King at his epic best. This book will thrill every reader who’s ever loved a novel by King.

(This book is already being looked at by Steven Spielberg for a mini series!)

The Peruke Maker by Ruby Domingues (blog tour)

The Peruke Maker: The Salem Witch Hunt Curse
by Ruby Domingues
Pages: 118 (Screenplay)
Publisher Outskirt Press, Inc.

The withc hunt hits feverish peak! Fear of the devil is as real as God. Witchcraft is a heinous crime a person could commit and is punishable by death at Gallows Hill for the victims accused of sorcery.

River reflections of Bridget's scantily clad youthful beauty with long, wild, flowing, red hair, is frozen in fear amidst the overture of the Banshee's foreboding and bloodcurdling wais of imminent death, that of her own.

The peruke maker's vengeful curse hastens chase for the innocent and is carried off by a whirl of ill-omened wind that transgresses all natural laws of time and space.

The Salem Witch Hunt Curse unearthed from necromancy, violates the course of natural events in a modern day world, relentlessly in quest for the avenger of innocent blood.

Sarah, a product of the 21st Century is inextricably caught in a fateful journey that comes full circle. But Michael's abiding love for her triumphs over evil, transcending the grave in a magical and symbolic act of rebirth at the stroke of midnight of the Autumnal Equinox.

About the Author:

The author, Ruby Dominguez is challenged by the conflicting complexities of the past and future.

Undeterred, she strokes with pen the somber and bright hues of her visions.

THE PERUKE MAKER, inspired by true events, is a meticulously researched screenplay that is laced with relevance and substance.

Due to a few problems I didn't receive this book till a couple days ago, so I haven't had a chance to read it yet. I told them I would go ahead and put up a blurb about the book and then post a review later.

Monday Blogger Spotlight!

Today on my blog I have Eleni from La Femme Reader. She has a great blog so I encourage everyone to check out her blog.

How long have you been blogging?

I've been blogging since the end of May 2009 - I know it's only for a short time, but I feel like I'm old already lol.

How did you come up with the name of your blog?

Okay well, my friend Jonathan had a project for school where he had to make a video game magazine for girls. He couldn't come up with a title so he asked for my advice and I came up with La Femme Games. When I decided to make my blog I still loved the title so I kept La Femme and put Readers at the end :) I love how Femme means woman or girl and most of my followers fit in that category, however I do love the gentlemen that join my blog as well!

Tell me a little about yourself.

I'm 24 years old and I live in New York. I already received my bachelor's in English and I'm currently in school again taking Education courses. My goal is to become an English teacher. Since, I love reading so much I hope to incorporate my passion into my teaching :) Some random facts: I'm Greek, I love gummi bears, I'm obsessed with recording my shows on DVR, I love anything vampires, I think Keanu Reeves is the sexiest guy ever, I think I might have a book addiction lol....um yup that pretty much sums up me! :)

Do you have any weekly features?

Yes, every Monday I have a meme which is called Monday's Question of the Day! I think of a question that has to do about books, well most of the time, and I love to hear the answers that my followers leave me. Here the link to last Monday's if you want to check it out:

http://lafemmereaders.blogspot.com/2009/11/mondays-questions-of-day.html. Besides that, I also do In My Mailbox, Waiting On Wednesday, Teaser Tuesdays which of course was created by other amazing bloggers.

What is your favorite genre? Do you just review it or do you review anything?

My favorite genre would be YA type books, especially supernatural and urban fantasy. I mostly do review this genre but sometimes I veer off into other types of fiction.

What are some of your favorite authors?

I have a lot, but just to name a few I love Simone Elkeles, Maggie Stiefvater, Stephenie Meyer, Becca Fitzpatrick, Cassandra Clare, PC Cast, etc.

What are some books you have recently read that you would deem a must read?

Recently I haven't been wowed in the YA world, but one book that stands out in my mind would have to be Hate List by Jennifer Brown. This book was so powerful that it moved me emotionally. I literally couldn't put it down. For some that I haven't read recently would be Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles, I really am in love with this book and of course the Twilight Saga, either you hate it or love it, and well I love it.

I would have to say I hold middle ground with the Twilight Saga.

Okay so everyone jump on over to La Femme Reader and check out some of her great reviews!

Review of Touched by a Vampire by Beth Felker Jones

Touched By A Vampire: Discovering the Hidden Messages in the Twilight Saga
by Beth Felker Jones

People around the world are asking the same question, enraptured with Edward and Bella’s forbidden romance in the Twilight Saga, a four-book serial phenomenon written by Stephenie Meyer. The bestsellers tell the story of a regular girl’s relationship with a vampire who has chosen to follow his “good” side. But the Saga isn’t just another fantasy–it’s teaching girls about love, sex, and purpose. With 48 million copies in print and a succession of upcoming blockbuster films, now is the time to ask the important question: Can vampires teach us about God’s plan for love?

Touched by a Vampire is the first book to investigate the themes of the Twilight Saga from a Biblical perspective. Some Christian readers have praised moral principles illustrated in the story, such as premarital sexual abstinence, which align with Meyer’s Mormon beliefs. But ultimately, Beth Felker Jones examines whether the story’s redemptive qualities outshine its darkness.

Cautionary, thoughtful, and challenging, Touched by a Vampire is written for Twilight fans, parents, teachers, and pop culture enthusiasts. It includes an overview of the series for those unfamiliar with the storyline and a discussion guide for small groups.

By now I am sure everyone knows that  I am not a huge twilight fan. Yes, I have read the books and I thought the first to were a complete bore while the last two were fairly good. Just like everyone else I was curious about this book, but I am not a huge Non-fiction fan.

I tried to read it and ended up just skimming throught it, but it had some interesting points. I think it is a good companion to have for parents to talk with the childeren about the book. There was a lot of things that she picked up on that I would have never really even thought off, honestly I didn't know a person could pick that much stuff out of one book series.

I do know that a lot of Christians don't think twilight is something their children should read so I think  this is a good book and might help explain some things to these parents that don't believe vampires should be allowed in Christian writing.

If you like Non-fiction and you like twilight then you might find this book interesting.

(Special thanks to Waterbrook Press for sending me a book to review)

Reveiw of Vampire Kisses 2: Kissing Coffins

Vampire Kisses 2: Kissing Coffins by Ellen Schreiber
Pages: 165
Publisher: Kathrine Tegen Books (Imprint of Harper Collins)

For Raven "Dullsville" has become far from dull when she finds out that her gothic dream guy really is a vampire. Now she must keep a huge secret from her best friend to make sure no one finds out about Alexander.

Alexander Sterling thought it would be best to leave Raven, to keep her safe. He never really thought that she would go chasing after him. Raven goes to "Hipsterville" to a place called The Coffin Club in search of Alexander but what she finds there is a little more sinister.

In looking for Alexander she has brought his nemisis to him, Jagger. Raven has never been more terrified and if she is not careful she could be in for a life altering decision she might not be ready for.

One thing I like about the Vampire Kiss novels so far is that they are short enough I can read one in a day. Though I think some things in the book are a bit cheesy compared to  the other YA vampire books I have read I really like how easy they are to read.

One thing I don't think it gives you is enough background on the characters to really allow you to react to what is happening to them. I like Raven and Alexander, but besides knowing that she is a goth girl who loves vampires and that he is a gothic vampire, you really don't have great character depth. I would love to hate Jagger and maybe even Luna, but I don't really know anything about them except that they are the bad vampires in the story.

Don't get me wrong though I liked the story well enough and will be going back to the library to see if they have the next book in, so that I can see what happens. The one thing that I really did like about this book was its cliffhanger ending. I mean, it pretty much just cuts you off and you are sort of like...WHAT.  I recommend it if you love any and all vampire YA novels.

Saturday mailbox raid

It's that time again! Time to take a look at what I got in my mailbox this week. I almost thought I was going to have a bit of a dry spell this week but almost everything came in today's mailbox. Hosted by Story Siren.

From PBS:

Dead End Dating by Kimberly Raye
Pages: 334
Publisher: Ballantine Books

A vivacious vampire with a flair for accessorizing, Lil Marchette is unlike most of her kind. She prefers lively shades of pink to dismal black (so not her color), plus she's a hopeless romantic. In need of a steady paycheck to support a compulsive cosmetics habit, Lil starts Dead End Dating (DED), a Manhatten-based matchmatching service that helps, smart, sophisticated singles like herself find eternity mates and may even help her stake a claim to her very own Count!

When Lil meets geeky vampire Francis Deville, she knows he's the perfect first client. If she can hook up Francis-- after a little revamping, of course--she will prove her skills to the vampire community and turn DED into the hottest dating service in the Big Apple. But just as her business takes off, Lil meets the (literally) drop-dead gorgeous bounty hunter Ty Bonner, who is hot on the chase of a serial killer. Instantly drawn to the luscious vamp stud, Lil really wants a tast. But as a made vampire, Ty can't procreate--and Lil will settle for nothing less. Luckily, between "vampifying" Francis and helping Ty solve his murder mystery, Lil has no time for silly romantic entanglements..even if Ty is all that and a Bloody Mary chaser!

Dead and Dateless by Kimberly Raye
Pages: 330
Publisher: Ballantine Books

The sassiest vampire in all of Manhattan, Lil Marchette, is the owner of Dead End Dating–a matchmaking service for hip, intelligent singles like herself. After only three months, business is booming, and she can finally pay her bills (or, more important, feed a hungry cosmetics addiction). But when one of her clients turns up dead (as in never coming back), Lil is named as the prime suspect.

Murder?

Sure, she’s a vampire, but she can’t even work up her nerve when it comes to blood-sucking. Hacking somebody to pieces is so out of the question.

To make matters worse, Lil must also contend with a pack of werewolves who ask–no, demand–that she find each one a tall, dark, and handsome mate before the next full moon. Plus, the to-die-for-if-I wasn’t-already-dead Ty Bonner, a lusciously sexy lover but totally unsuitable eternity mate, is never far from her midnight fantasies. But Lil has no time for such thoughts. She must prove her innocence and focus on pairing off the dead and the furry–and maybe stake a claim to her own tasty true love.

Undead and Unemployed by Mary Janice Davidson
Pages: 294
Publisher: Berkley Senstation

Nothing can make Betsy Taylor give up her shoe fetish--even dying and rising as the new Queen of the Vampires. Being royally undead isn't all it's cracked up to be--there are still bills to be paid. And Betsy is determined to live as normally as possible, even it it means getting a job. A "feet" she accomplishes with panache, landing her dream job selling designer shoes at Macy's.

Things couldn't be better--except for her new friends, who keep pestering her while she's on the clock. As if she has time to socialize when there are deliciously sinful shoes to try on--and buy at a discount. IL seems that vampires are being murdered in St. Paul, and they're all clamoring for Betsy to do something about it. The worst part is she's going to have to enlist the help of the one vamp who makes her blood boil: the oh-so-sexy Sinclair'. Now, she's really treading on dangerous ground--high heels and all...

A Fistful of Charms by Kim Harrison
Pages: 528
Publisher: HarperTorch

The evil night things that prowl Cincinnati despise witch and bounty hunter Rachel Morgan. Her new reputation for the dark arts is turning human and undead heads alike with the intent to possess, bed, and kill her -- not necessarily in that order.

Now a mortal lover who abandoned Rachel has returned, haunted by his secret past. And there are those who covet what Nick possesses -- savage beasts willing to destroy the Hollows and everyone in it if necessary.

Forced to keep a low profile or eternally suffer the wrath of a vengeful demon, Rachel must nevertheless act quickly. For the pack is gathering for the first time in millennia to ravage and to rule. And suddenly more than Rachel's soul is at stake.

Every Which Way But Dead by Kim Harrison
Pages: 501
Publisher: HarperTorch

There's no witch in Cincinnati tougher, sexier, or more screwed up than bounty hunter Rachel Morgan, who's already put her love life and her soul in dire jeopardy through her determined efforts to bring criminal night creatures to justice.

Between "runs," she has her hands full fending off the attentions of her blood-drinking partner, keeping a deadly secret from her backup, and resisting a hot new vamp suitor.

Rachel must also take a stand in the war that's raging in the city's underworld, since she helped put away its former vampire kingpin -- and made a deal with a powerful demon to do so that could cost her an eternity of pain, torment, and degradation.

And now her dark "master" is coming to collect his due.

(seems like just about everythin on my PBS wishlist became available..lol)

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Pages: 384
Publisher: Delacorte books for young readers

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his first name. His memory is blank. But he’s not alone. When the lift’s doors open, Thomas finds himself surrounded by kids who welcome him to the Glade—a large, open expanse surrounded by stone walls.

Just like Thomas, the Gladers don’t know why or how they got to the Glade. All they know is that every morning the stone doors to the maze that surrounds them have opened. Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.

Thomas was expected. But the next day, a girl is sent up—the first girl to ever arrive in the Glade. And more surprising yet is the message she delivers.

Thomas might be more important than he could ever guess. If only he could unlock the dark secrets buried within his mind.
