Review of Vampire Dairies Vol. 1 by L. J. Smith

Vampire Dairies Vol. 1 by L. J. Smith
Pages: 492
Publisher: Harper Teen

Since this is two books in one its very hard to try and sum it up but I will give it my best shot.

It is mainly about a love triangle between Elena and two brothers Stefan and Damon. The brothers are vampires and Stefan is the one that Elena wants, but sometimes she feels drawn towards Damon. Damon is evil, while Stefan is not.

Fells Church was a quiet little town until Stefan comes to live there, because that brings his brother also. His brother is pretty much reeking havoc among the town and making it look like it is all Stefan's fault. Basically, Damon is seeking revenge on his brother and the poor town just happens to be in the middle.

At the end of book two it leave you hanging and I can't say anymore with out giving away to much. I just hate when someone gives away to much of the plot.

My Thoughts:

I first want to say that I decided to read this series after watching a few of the episodes of the CW show Vampire Diaries. After just reading a few pages into the first chapter I could already tell that it was NOTHING like the show. The further I got into it I can officially say they the only thing CW did to base the show on the book was use the title. It is so much different than the show and now I know why all the Vampire Diary book fans are upset with the show.

Okay, now that that rant is out of the way, I must say I liked the first volume of the Vampire Diaries series. L. J. Smith gives you just enough of all the characters involved to let you make up your mind where you like them or you don't.
Elena, was one of those hey look at me I'm hot and can get any guy I want sort of girls so she can't believe it when Stefan doesn't show a interest in her. My first impression of her was not really that good. She grows on you though as you can see her change while she is with Stefan. Stefan, he comes in all mysterious and sexy and you like him right off the bat. Damon, is one of those sexy, dangerous types that you just love to hate. I think one of my favorite characters so far would have to be Matt. Here is a guy who just lost his love to the new guy in school, yet he has sort of befriended Stefan. He mainly does this out of his love for Elena and your heart just goes out to the poor guy. He is so sweet and kind you just can't help but like him.
The story line is interesting enough to keep you wanting to find out what was going to happen between Stefan, Elena, and Damon. (Twilighters don't hate me, but I actually like these series more.) Even though they have rings that help them go out during the day, its a bit more true to my perception of vampires, they are a little more blood thirsty. Stefan himself admits to draining a little blood from the old man under the bridge, and he takes a bit of Elena's as well. Though he does survive mostly on animals, it just seems more vampire like to me.

The only problem I had with it was how well Elena took the news that Stefan was a vampire. (had a problem with that in Twilight also) Okay so at first she freaks out a bit, but as soon as he saves her from falling off the roof she is all Oooh Stefan. Then they are in his room making out and she is sharing a little of her blood..umm hello you just found out the man of your dreams is a vampire and could kill you!! I just think she should freak out a little longer before coming to terms with the fact that her boyfriend is not a human. ( I would like to read a book where the lady plays a little bit more hard to get when it comes to a vampire) :)

Other than that I think it was a very good YA novel about two brothers who can't stand each other and the girl they both love. I only have one other thing to say..Quick get me volume two now!!! Guess that might be going on my next Barnes and noble online book quest. :)

Happy Halloween!

I just wanted to wish everyone and safe and happy halloween. Don't eat to much candy and try not to get chased by any monsters. HA HA HA

F&F: Are Angels the New Vampire?

Today's Discussion:

Ann Rice became quite famous with her vampire books but when she converted back to her Christian faith, she left her vampire books behind much to the dismay of her fans. She felt that their was no redemptive stories to tell about vampires. Meanwhile, Christian fiction has been released about vampires.

So my question for you today is... what do you think about these kinds of stories? Do you enjoy the fiction stories about vampires or the fictional stories about angels? Are you more likely to read about a angel than a vampire? What do you think is the appeal of these books?

Answer:

Okay you got me, I like a good vampire story, I admit it! Though I will admit I wasn't a huge fan of Twilight like most people, I did read it. I have heard of Ann Rice's new book Angel Time and I think it sounds pretty cool, I have never read a angel book, nor have I ever read Ann Rice's Vampire novels (I know, I know you can't believe it..lol) I did watch Interview with a Vampire back when it first came out. I have always watched Vampire movies more than read the novels, but lately I have gotten on the band wagon and have my share of these YA vampire novels scattered around my desk waiting to be read.

I really think that mainly I just like a cool supernatural read, its not like I believe that vampires or werewolves exist or that you can fall in love with a ghost and live happily ever after, but its usually the story line that makes me what to read it. Fiction is fiction, its a place to escape and get away from normal every day life. I think I am not sure about Angel books because I do believe in Angels, but at the same time I think I will give Ann Rice's book a try and see what I think. Not many authors that I know of can put angels in a good light like they should be, and I don't like books that make fun of them, those I won't read!

I will be reading Tracy Bateman's Thirsty novel and I am curious to see what she does with this book because I have heard she has gotten a lot of grief over it. Sue Dent also has books out about Vampire and Werewolves called Never Ceese and Forever Richard, I have read Never Ceese and it wasn't to bad.

For me the appeal is a good storyline, maybe a bit of a scare, a good fun read. I am not one that just reads only paranormal/supernatural/urban fantasy type books, I read a lot of different books, and I read them because I like them. Sometimes when I am reading and I read to many of the same type its nice to through in something strange to help me keep on reading.

This is my opinion and if you disagree please don't get mean with your comments.

All winners are selected using Random.org and I will contact each on of you via your email before the day is out. If I don't get a respond in 48hrs I will pick a new winner.

Friday Find: Vampire Kisses (Anyone heard of this book)

I went to the library the other day and looked up a bunch of books I was wanting to read to see if they had any, which most were already checked out. I ran across this book called Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber it to was checked out so I put myself on the reserve list like I did the others. Well this one just happened to come in the other day so I went and picked it up today.

Here is the blurb:

In her small town, dubbed "Dullsville" sixteen year old Raven, a vampire crazed goth girl is an outcast. But not for long..
The intriguing and rumored to be haunted mansion on top of Benson Hill has stood vacant and boarded up for years. That is, until its mysteriously strange new occupants move in. Who are these creepy people-especially the handsome, dark, and elusive Alexander Sterling? Or rather, what are they? Are they vampires? Raven, who secretly covets a vampire kiss, both at the risk of her own mortality and Alexander's loving trust, is dying to uncover the truth.

So has anyone heard of this book? Is it any good? I have it a the house to read but right now I am reading something else. I am just curious if anyone has read it and if its good enough to give it my time? Its not a very long book, so wouldn't take long to read.

Shadow Government by Grant R. Jeffrey

Shadow Government by Grant R. Jeffrey

Publisher: Waterbrook Press

Non-fiction

Security cameras, surveillance of your financial transactions, radio frequency spy chips hidden in consumer products, tracking of your Internet searches, and eavesdropping on your e-mail and phone calls. Without your knowledge or consent, every aspect of your life is observed and recorded. But who is watching the watchers?

An utlra-secret global elite, functioning as a very real shadow government, controls technology, finance, international law, world trade, political power, and vast military capabilities. Those who hold power are invisible to all but a few insiders. These unrivaled leaders answer to no earthly authority, and they won't stop until they control the world.

My thoughts: Okay, I always knew that they were tracking things I did, but not until after I read this book did I know the extent to how they are tracking things I did. Did you know that right now someone is probably tracking my little blog, reading my email, looking at what sites I have been on today! You can't even shop online with out someone watching what you are buying. Ha, I just had a thought, the government know probably knows what kind of deodorant I bought today using my ATM card that probably has a smart chip in it that I didn't know about.

Its really sort of scary to know that your government is tracking your every movement. But it is not really a recent thing, they have been doing small things even before 9/11, but that horrible day did bring it more out in the open.

If you like learning about these sort of things and how the bible fore warns us about these things that are happening then you will find this book very interesting.

You may purchase this book here.

Wisdom Hunter by Randall Arthur

Publisher: Multnomah Books

Pastor Jason Faircloth knows what he believes. His clear faith, in fact, is why he is one of the most prominent pastors in Atlanta. He relies on it to discipline his daughter, his wife, his church. He prays daily that others would come to see God's ways as he does. And it will cost him everything he has.

Groping for answers in the face of tragedy, Jason determines to find the one person left who might provide healing: the granddaughter kept hidden from him. His search takes him on an international adventure-- and deep into his tormented soul.

A Fast-paced suspense novel rich in spiritual depth. Wisdom Hunter explores what it means to break free of Christian legalism and discover how grace can make the difference between life and death.

My Thoughts: I have not finished this book, but I am having a hard time getting past the main characters attitude. I don't like overly religious characters, I got to chapter two and just couldn't stand Jason. I have seen a lot of reviews of this book and people love this book, so I am not knocking it, but I think I will have to sit it aside and try again later. Sometimes you just have to be in the mood for a certain book.

If it is something you might want to purchase please go to here.

Reveiw of Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

Wicked lovely by Melissa Marr

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible fairies!

Aislinn has tried very hard her whole life not to stare at the fairies she can see all around her. She has the sight, it was something passed down to her from her grandmother and mother. If fairies know that you can see them they could do something very nasty to you. So its very important to try and pay no attention to them.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible fairies!

But how can you not speak to them when they are following you everywhere and glamouring themselves to look like teenagers and talking to you. Aislinn tries really hard to ignore Keenan when he starts talking to her. Her grandmother always told her the importance of not talking to the fairies.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention:

Its a little to late for that since Keenan doesn't seem to wan to leave Aislinn alone. Keenan is the Summer King fairy and he is looking for his Summer Queen. If he doesn't find her then all of summer shall perish, but the Winter Queen makes it difficult for him and makes him play the games.

When Keenan thinks he has found the right one, the one mortal to be his Summer Queen, the Winter girl must try and persuade her that he is not a good person. To not believe anything he says. Donia was the last girl that Keenan though was the Summer Queen, but now she is the Winter girl and still in love with Keenan.

Its not real hard for Donia to want to tell Aislinn that Keenan is wrong, but she also hopes in a way that Aislinn is the Summer Queen. Aislinn on the other hand could care less about being a Summer Queen because she is in love with her friend Seth. Seth wasn't sure about Aislinn seeing fairies but because he cares for her so much he tries to help her find out how to get the fairies away from her, but they are stalking her. Something fairies don't normally do.

Aislinn has to come to terms with the fact that she could be the Summer Queen, because everything is on the line, her loved ones, her freedom, and her very life.

I have never read a fairy book before but I had seen a lot of reviews on this book so I thought I would give it a try. I found it to be pretty good, sometimes I thought it could pick up the pace a little but over all I really liked it. I think what I liked about it the most was the ending. Though towards the end you short of know what is going to happen but I think once you get to the end you are just sort of like..wow..that just ended differently that I thought it would.

Melissa Marr's made characters that you could really feel for and feel a deep connection too. I really loved Seth's character, not many people would have believed Aislinn when she told him she could see fairies. Instead of thinking she was totally insane he just told her things were going to be okay and started doing research on fairies. Now that is the sort of friend (want to be boyfriend) to have.

I also liked Donia I really felt sorry for her, she was the last person to fall for Keenan's glamour. Even though she was mad at him for deceiving her and making her the Winter girl, she was still in love with him. You could feel the turmoil that she had to deal with; love him, but hope he found his Summer Queen.

Over all I thought this was a good book and now I need to get the next book in the series.

15hrs in a tribute to Dewey

I have seen this name Dewey around on some book bloggers sites, but I never knew who she was, or why they honoured her. It wasn't until I ran across The Weekly Geek that I seen a tribute to her that told of what a great book blogger she was and how she started a lot of different things including the 24hr read-a-thon that we are participating in today.

This lovely lady who started this wonderful read-a-thon passed away last November. So even though I didn't get to know her this is my small tribute to the lady who started the 24hr read-a-thon. THANK YOU DEWEY, I have had a fun day!

Now for a update: I am currently on page 204 and closing in on the first half of Vampire Diaries Vol. 1, but I am getting so tired that I am just not really making much progress. Not sure how much longer I will be able to hold out with out going to bed. Though it has been fun and I have made progress with getting in a few books. Hopefully I will be back with more updates but if not then you will know that I have crashed.

Happy Reading!

24hr Read-a-thon: Mid-Event Survey

Mid-Event Survey:

1. What are you reading right now? Vampire Diaries Vol. 1 by L. J. Smith

2. How many books have you read so far? 2 this one is my third one.

3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? The one I am reading was one I couldn't wait to get into, not sure if I will get to anymore..eyes getting droopy..LOL

4. Did you have to make any special arrangements to free up your whole day? Not really, its my day off and I usually lounge around..lol

5. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? Well I did have to clean around the house a bit, eat, sweep off the front porch. I did them then went back to reading. It was actually nice to be able to stretch and well a lady has to eat..LOL

6. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? That I have stuck with it and finished more reading that I thought I might.

7. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? No not really. Its been cool so far.

8. What would you do differently, as a Reader or a Cheerleader, if you were to do this again next year? Go to bed earlier the night before..aaaah I am getting tired.

9. Are you getting tired yet? Yep!! Eyes are going funky on me..lol

10. Do you have any tips for other Readers or Cheerleaders, something you think is working well for you that others may not have discovered? Don't make your pile to overwhelming if you are a reader..that is why I only listed four books. I didn't want to be disappointed if I couldn't make it through half.

Review of Jewel Of His Heart by Maggie Brendan

The Jewel of his Heart was a novel about Juliana who is left alone after the death of her mother. She is very independent and her mother has pretty much taught her how to stand on her own. Because of her father funning off and never coming back she has a lack of trust when it comes to men. Especially if that man wants to make a living in the mines.

Josh McBride makes his living with his sheep farm, but when he finds some rare stones on his property he his thinking his prospects could be looking bright. He meets Juliana and he can't quit thinking about her even though he is a lot older than she is, he really thinks she is the one for him.

Juliana gets a job at the newspaper and is holding her own by herself, but she feels a attraction to Josh. When she finds out about him wanting to get into the mining business it puts her off a bit. She won't marry a miner.

Its a really easy read and I think that might have been some of my problem with this book. It just always felt like there was something missing. The dialogue was to.. I don't know, it just didn't flow well. I liked Juliana and Josh well enough to want to see them happy and it is not like its wasn't a good read it just sort of fell a bit flat in the middle and I had a hard time finishing it.

I would read a book from this author again, I just really think maybe I have just read to many of the same sort of books to much and need a break.

24hr Read-a-thon: Book Two down!

I have finished The Aelf Club by Stuart B. Richardson its a YA book about a young girl learning that she is not human but a Aelf and helps catch her father's killer (my extremely brief summary..lol)

Now I am on to Vampire Diaries Vol. 1

I am currently on page 81 of 492 so this one might take me a while, but I am surprise to find that I have made it to my third book already.

Happy reading everyone!

Update at 12hrs: I am on page 126 of Vampire Diaries. Also had to throw a book review in during the eleventh hour or so because I forgot it was due on my blog by today..LOL.

First book down!

I will probably just update this post as I go, but wanted to let everyone know that I have finished my first book. I am a slow reader so its good for me to have gotten at least one book finish so early..LOL First book down is Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr.

Now trying to finish The Aelf Club by Staurt B. Richardson (though I admit I might have to put that one to the side if I can't get more into it..) I am on page 106 out of 318. Small update, had a few interuptions but have made it to page 155.

And we are off! The Read-a-thon begins!

The read-a-thon has its first challenge out and since I just got up and started eating my breakfast I figured I would start off doing the challenge.

Where are you reading from today?

3 facts about me …

How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? I have four books in my TBR for today, most of them are partially read books that I need to finish up.

Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? My only goal is to try and finish the book I posted on the post below this one.

If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, Any advice for people doing this for the first time? This is my first time..yeaaah me. :)

Get ready and start reading!

Read-a-thon: Are you reading?

Just wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow is the 24 hr read-a-thon and I think everyone should participate even if you can't do the whole 24 hrs. There is no way I am staying up for 24 hrs but I decided to try and participate at least a little. I have a few books that I need to finish up that I have been reading on so I think that even though I am not a fast reader that this could be a good time to sit around and try and finish up some of them.

The list is short because I know I can't finish that many even in 24hrs (wish I was a faster reader):

The Vampire Diaries: Volume 1 by L. J. Smith (this one is good, but boy did they change things around on the show, hate that.)

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr (this one is not to bad)

The Aelf's Club by Stuart B. Richardson (this one I am having a hard time with, but trying to stick it out)

Wisdom Hunter by Randall Arthur (Hopefully I will at least start this one..lol)

So if you want to read with us come on and sign up there is still time at http://24hourreadathon.com/

I have a winner!

The winner of the 250 Business Cards is Nora! Congratulations and I will be getting in contact with you soon.

BTT: One Question

If you could ask your favorite author (alive or dead) one question … who would you ask, and what would the question be?

Hmmm, I think I would ask Charlotte Bronte' "Did you model Mr. Rochester from Jane Eyre off of any males that she might have known at the time?" He is one of my favorite male characters. *not sure if I spelled his name right though..lol*

It's Monday! What are you reading?

What are you reading is hosted by J.Kaye's Book blog. This is my first time participating in this but I have seen them around and wanted to get in on more posting so here I go. If you would like to participate just to go J. Kaye's blog and leave a link in her Mr. Linky. I was very surprised to see how many people participate.

Here is what I am currently reading:

The Aelf's Club by Stuart Richardson: Its not a bad book but it has to much of that higher plain new age spirituality feel to it that just make it hard to read. Its a YA book and well the man who wrote it is a Spiritualist..lol. (He will be giving away a copy on my blog during my 25 Days of Christmas giveaway that will start Dec. 1st)

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr: Its a YA fairy story and so far its not to bad.

Vampire Diary's Volume 1: I have been hooked on the show so I decided to give it a try and already got a hair color issue from book to show..LOL Oh well that is how it always goes, but so far the book is pretty good.

Here is what is up next:

Wolf's Gambit by W.D. Gagliani: I am hoping for a cool werewolf book with some bite.

The Magic Warble by Victoria Simcox: Not sure if its Juvenile or YA fiction fantasy.

Review of Werewolf Rising by R. L. LaFever

Luc Grayson is your average twelve year old boy. That is until a week before his thirteenth birthday and he starts having strange dreams about a beast. When he looks in the mirror in his dreams the beast is him. He has never been in a fight before, but knocks the bully a good one for the first time and he wonders where did all that rage come from.

He doesn't understand why his Uncle Steven can't stand him. Why he tells him he must never start a fight while under his roof. Its like he can sense his Uncles fear of him but has no clue why. Luc wins the jogathon and is amazed at his abilities to run fast and he actually likes it.

He has know clue about what he really is until a stranger comes the door of his house and says he is taking Luc back to his fathers people. Luc feels a sense of peace when near the stranger and learns that he is also his Uncle, his fathers brother. It is with him that he finds out that on his thirteenth birthday, he will shift. He founds out that he is a werewolf.

While learning about his new life and the way of the pack, he finds out that there is danger near. His very own Uncle, the one he left, has sent people to get rid of the werewolf kind. He must do what he can to make sure than Steven never gets near his new family, or causes anyone harm.

My Thoughts:

I had heard of R. L. LaFever off of another blog. She was talking about her newest book (can't remember the name), but it sounded interesting so I thought while I was at the library I would check one of the authors books out and give it a try. This is Juvenile fiction and you can tell this while reading it. I would say its probably for ages 8-12.

One thing that drove me crazy was the words 'pissed off', the author uses it way to much, though I am sure that is a very juvenile word and they can relate to it, but all I could think of was could you use some sort of variations of anger, like mad, outraged, etc.

So some might be wondering about the contents of the book seeing that it is about werewolf's, but this is the mildest werewolf book I have ever seen and it would make a great Halloween read for youngsters who want something about werewolf's but not get scared. I think the cover of the book is scarier than the actual book..lol

One thing I found interesting about the book was how they could shift into wolves and still have their cloths on. Shift back into humans and still be wearing clothing, that it all shifted with them. As long as their cloths were made of from the earth, like cotton then it could remain with them when they shifted.

The only real disappointment for me is that I thought the ending was not that exciting. I know its for children and it has a nice moral ending, but just not enough excitement. Over all I thought it was a decent book and would recommend it to my own niece who is nine. I will be trying out more from this author as she has some different types of books, they are not all supernatural. I think she deals a lot more in fantasy with her other books.
